Description
Palaska cartridge belt with floral decoration, Ottoman Empire, Turkey or Balkans, early 19th century
Long arched case closed by a lid fixed by two rings and flanked by two suspension rings. Gilt copper alloy, repoussé and chased with a rocaille decoration of foliage scrolls punctuated with flowers around a poly-lobed medallion on the front, the back decorated with the Seal of Solomon flanked on either side by a crescent moon embracing a stylised star. Inside, a wooden cartouche perforated with 21 cartouche slots.
Height: 8 cm; length: 19 cm
Minor accidents, traces of oxidation, wooden cartouche damaged, one side ring missing.
A rectangular Qur'an case with domed lid in embossed copper alloy engraved with floral decoration and crescent moon mosque pinnacles. 9.7 x 12.1 cm. One of the pendants is missing, and the closing system is fragmentary.
This type of cartridge belt is rare. An example is in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
