Description
Calligraphic composition hilye-i serif, Ottoman Turkey, signed and dated 1873
Calligraphy in ink on paper enhanced with pigments and gold and composed of a central medallion inscribed with 12 lines of text in naskhi Arabic in black ink giving a poetic description of the Prophet whose name is inscribed in red in the centre. Around it are six illuminated roundels on a blue floral background inscribed with the names of the four Rashidun caliphs and the Prophet's two grandsons. In the upper part, two calligraphic cartouches inscribed in thuluth with the Bismillah and in muhaqqaq with an extract from a Hadith. In the lower part, a cartouche inscribed in muhaqqaq from a Qur'anic extract (Qur'an, XXI, v. 107). Signed and dated lower centre: Muhammad Khurshid Rushdi, 1290 H / 1873. Mounted later as an album page on card stock illuminated in gold with floral decoration and signed "PINAR 95".
