Description
Qibla indicator, Ottoman Empire, late 19th - early 20th century
Small qibla indicator dial painted in gold on a green paper background to indicate directions. Two rocaille lambrequins and an arrow complete the decoration in black ink. The dial is set under glass on a campaniform silver pedestal with chased geometric and floral friezes. Sah and tughra hallmarks (illegible), control hallmarks. In its garnet leather case lined with purple velvet.

Missing movable arrow, accident to the hallmark.
A small dial of the same type, painted on cardboard and set in a metal frame under glass, is in the David Collection in Copenhagen (528/1995). It is dated 1883, has a hand and is illustrated with the black stone of the Ka'aba. A third of the same type without a needle and set in a white metal case sold at Christie's, London, on 23 April 2002 (lot 14). The silver campaniform stand appears to be rare.
