Description
Large Ottoman floral embroidery, Turkey, late 16th or early 17th century Polychrome silk thread embroidery on unbleached linen sewn in three strips, creating a network of raspberry-coloured plant stems edged with blue leaves, green foliage evoking a crown at the intersections, raspberry palmettes with tulip hearts between each stem. In the middle of this network, three beige sequins complete the composition. 221 x 155 cm Wear, some holes and accidents, some stains and wetness, some restorations. This type of large-format embroidery was used as wall hangings or bed throws. A very similar embroidery with the same decorative design but a different palette is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (No. 155-1893) and is attributed to the 16th century as in Marianne Elis and Jennifer Wearden, Ottoman Embroidery, London: 2001, pp. 16 and 34, pl.4.
