Description
Wooden salon, Syria, early 20th century
An engraved and champlevé wooden salon inlaid with mother-of-pearl and bone, consisting of a bench, a pair of chairs and a pedestal table. The bench has a rectangular seat resting on four legs, the arms curving outwards and openwork with three arcatures in the form of an accolade. Decorated with foliage scrolls and woven friezes; the pair of folding chairs decorated with foliage scrolls punctuated with mother-of-pearl inlaid discs or stars. The top of the backrest is in the shape of a poly-lobed mandorla housing a crescent moon motif embracing a mother-of-pearl inlaid star; the pedestal table has an octagonal top resting on a canted base, each with a niche flanked by two feet. Fine inlaid decoration of geometric modules, a large octagonal register housing a pseudo-tughra and a floral motif in the centre of the top.
