Description
Couple under an archway, India, Deccan, early 19th century Gouache and gold on paper depicting a couple standing and embracing, the man dressed in a white jama and wearing a plum turban, the woman wearing a gold skirt with floral motifs, her head and shoulders covered with a transparent muslin veil. The couple stand before a landscape of hills under a poly-lobed archway resting on columns with lotiform bases and capitals, flanked by panelling painted with animals in landscapes. Mounted as an album page on cardboard painted with a margin decorated with scrolls of gilded palmettes alternating with rosettes dotted with red pigments. At the top, the margin is inscribed in Persian "Raja Kashn [?] Rani Maharani". Framed. Size of page: 38.2 x 29 cm; size of painting: 23 x 15.5 cm Some wear, a few repaired accidents, a large pest hole in the margin, small stains.
