Description
Green bird, India, Company School, circa 1820-30 Gouache on paper depicting a green thrush on a branch of a shrub with red berries, a butterfly with outstretched wings in the upper left corner. Numbered 21 in the upper right-hand corner and mounted as an album page on numbered Oriental paper, captioned and titled in ink with the vernacular name in phonetics of the species "N°10, From the Native Name, this should be a Merops, but if it resembles anything, it may be Thrush, Hurruah [...]". Frame. Total size on sight: 30.5 x 25 cm; size of painting on sight: 21 x 18 cm. Minor foxing and stains. Provenance: Sotheby's sale, London, 10 December 1974, lot 246. According to the English legend, the bird depicted could be a green thrush or a merops. However, the name "Hurruah" on the lower part of the painting seems to derive from the Hindi "Hariyali", which refers to a green pigeon common on the Indian subcontinent.
