Estimate €300 - €400
Description
European portrait, North India, Rajasthan, 20th century Gouache, ink and gold on paper depicting a man standing with his left elbow resting on a pedestal in front of a balustrade. In the background, a tablecloth-covered pedestal table with a vase and a book, and a green curtain. The subject is holding a handkerchief in his left hand, wearing a turban and richly adorned with pearl necklaces. The scene is surrounded by a green border. Framed. Sight size: 27 x 17.3 cm Stains, accidents, polychromy leaks, one corner torn. The legend on the back indicates that the subject is Tilkayit Sri Govardhan Lalji, high priest of the Pusti Marga Sampradaya (1878-1933). The pose, the decorum and the man's greying face suggest that this portrait was inspired by a photograph.
