Ayin mirror with confronting sphinxes, Eastern Iran, Khorasan, 13th century
Cast bronze disc decorated with two sphinxes standing back to back on either side of a central hanging knob, against a background of foliage. An inscription of greetings in kufic Arabic runs around the rim.
Diameter: 10.4 cm
Oxidation.
Mirrors very similar to this one are held in public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (Inv. 928-1886 and 442-1887) and the Musée du Louvre in Paris (OA 3945, OA 7871/72 and AD 14918, from which our mirror appears to take its inscription).
