Plumier decorated with figures, Iran qâjâr, 19th century
Oblong papier-mâché pen tray with painted, gilded and lacquered decoration of animated scenes of figures in cartouches and bust portraits of figures in medallions on three sides. Many of the scenes depict piety, with figures in prayer or meditation, and the figures are dressed in European style. Several architectural elements appear in the landscapes. The interior is gilded and inscribed with Persian numerals 346. The underside and sides of the inner compartment are painted in gold with hatayi floral decoration.

The pencil box has been completely re-glazed, with chips and a large skip of varnish.
