Description
Two calligraphies from the same muraqqa album, Iran qâjâr, 19th century Two calligraphies on paper in Persian nasta'liq in black ink in white reserves on a gold background. The first, a siyah mashq exercise of several multidirectional lines copied on fine canvas and framed by two horizontal lines. The second, four verses from a robaiyat by Ubayd Zakani, the text framed with illuminated floral motifs and followed by the name of the calligrapher 'Abbas Nûri and the date 1245 AH / 1829. Mounted on album pages on green card with pink and orange borders. Size of calligraphies: 20 x 9.5 cm and 20 x 10.5 cm; size of pages: 29.8 x 18.3 cm. Wear, stains. The name Abbas Nûrî, which appears on one of the calligraphies in this lot, seems to be the great calligrapher of the Qâjâr period (d. 1839-40), who was also secretary to Prince Imam Virdi Mirza at the court of Fath 'Alî Shah Qajar and governor of the provinces of Qazvin and Borujerd. Self-taught in the art of calligraphy from the work of Mir 'Imad, he excelled particularly in the mastery of nasta'liq.
