Description
Two calligraphies from the same muraqqa album, Iran qâjâr, 19th century
Two calligraphies on paper in Persian nasta'liq in black ink in reserves on a gold background. The first consists of six staggered distichs in reserves with a red outline; the second consists of 8 horizontal lines completed with the date 1265 AH / 1848 and the name of the calligrapher Vesal, followed by the probably apocryphal name of the copyist al-Osted 'Emad Hassani written in smaller characters. Mounted on album pages on green card with a fishnet decoration of medallions with starred hearts and red and gold borders.
Size of calligraphies: 17.2 x 9.7 cm and 16.1 x 8.7 cm; size of pages: 29.7 x 18.3 cm
Wear, stains, small accidents, sunned margins, some words erased on the second page.
An apocryphal inscription on the second calligraphy attributes it to the Safavid calligrapher 'Emad Hassani, but the erased words followed by the name 'Vesal' on the last line seem to refute this attribution. Given the date, it could be the work of Abo'l Qasem Farhang ibn al-Vesal, son of the great poet and calligrapher Muhammad Shafi' known as Vesal of Shiraz (1779-1846).
