[Boulangism – Militaria] Georges Boulanger (1837–1891), at the Imperial Military Academy of Saint-Cyr, 1854–1856 A collection of 25 exercise plates drawn in ink and pencil, some with period colour highlights, contained in a large folio-sized register bound in cardboard, mounted on tabs, the majority bearing the signature of Cadet Boulanger and a date. Significant foxing and water stains An extremely rare collection of practical exercises produced by Georges Boulanger during his officer training at the Imperial Special Military Academy of Saint-Cyr, which he joined in 1854 as part of the 39th intake, known as the ‘Sevastopol’ intake (1854–1856). These plates illustrate the multidisciplinary training of a future officer under the Second Empire: topography and cartography (mastery of conventional colours, field surveying exercises, and different scales for drawings); fortification and engineering (mastery of drawing). Georges Boulanger completed his studies at Saint-Cyr with an honourable ranking but without being among the ‘botte’ (the top graduates of the intake). Out of the 460 cadets in the Sevastopol intake, he graduated 132nd. This ranking nevertheless allowed him to choose the line infantry, his preferred branch. Upon graduation in 1856, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and posted to the 1st Regiment of Algerian Skirmishers.
