General Boulanger travelled to the United States to represent France at the centenary celebrations of the Battle of Yorktown during the autumn and early winter of 1881–1882 (a decisive victory in the American War of Independence achieved with French assistance). He headed the French military mission; during this trip, he forged ties in particular with Count Arthur Dillon (whom he met there), who would go on to become the principal financier of the Boulangist movement.
