Description
[Boulangism] Georges Boulanger (1837–1891), Brigadier-General in New York Two full-length portraits of the 44-year-old Brigadier-General in uniform Photographic prints by Marc Gambier, a photographer of French origin based in New York, 1881 31 x 18.5 cm, one of which is mounted on card with a signed inscription by General Boulanger, dated New York, 1 January 1882 General Boulanger travelled to the United States to represent France at the centenary celebrations of the Battle of Yorktown during the autumn and early winter of 1881–1882 (a decisive victory in the American War of Independence achieved with French assistance). He headed the French military mission; during this trip, he forged ties in particular with Count Arthur Dillon (whom he met there), who would go on to become the principal financier of the Boulangist movement.
