Launched in 1883, the winter carnival lasted for only five years (1883–1885, 1887 and 1889) due to its prohibitive cost. The festivities took place over a week in late January or early February: ice skating, tobogganing, a grand ball, a mock attack on the ice palace built on Dominion Square, the giant lion and the maze on the Place d’Armes. In 1885, the ice palace required 12,000 blocks of ice, sourced from the St Lawrence ice floes. Enclosed: Invitation to the 1885 Winter Carnival, Montreal, 15 January 1885 Three letters and a telegram addressed to General Boulanger by Honoré Beaugrand, 1885–1887. Honoré Beaugrand, journalist and newspaper owner, Mayor of Montreal from 1885 to 1887, became friends with General Boulanger during the latter’s stay in Montreal in 1881 as part of the French military mission invited to commemorate the Centenary of Yorktown.
