[Photographs] An Alsatian or Lorrain conscript on his way to his garrison in Cologne, 1889–1892 A substantial, artificially bound souvenir album of photographic prints, 33 x 30 cm, bound in blue half-maroquin with corner pieces, compiled in July–August 1892 by a conscript from Lorraine or Alsace, who was posted in 1889–1890 to the 53rd Westphalian Infantry Regiment, garrisoned in Cologne, Germany. Approx. 240 photographs, mostly printed on albumen paper, in small and large formats, mounted, some captioned, taken by photographers such as Giorgio Sommer in Naples, Francis Frith & Co., and Carl Hertel in Mainz, documenting the grand tour from Nancy and Épinal to Cologne. Views of towns, streets, monuments and landscapes: the Federal Festival in Bern; Basel; Münster; the Münschestein disaster; Lucerne; the Rigi Railway at Vitznau; Fribourg; Strasbourg (cathedral, the destroyed ‘New Temple’, the destroyed stone gate, Place Kléber, the Thieves’ Museum, the Imperial Palace, Gutenberg’s house); Mainz; Frankfurt (synagogue, railway station, statues, squares, cathedral); Wiesbaden (casino, Greek Orthodox church); Fold-out map: The course of the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne; Bonn; Koblenz; Aachen (cathedral, medieval gate, town hall); Cologne (Cathedral Bridge, waterfall, town hall, statues, St Gedeon’s Church, the Golden Chamber of St Ursula’s Basilica, animals in the botanical garden, etc.) The album ends with a photograph of a group of soldiers from the 53rd Westphalian Regiment.
