Description
[Photographs] The Russian Trans-Caspian Military Railway, 1880s–1890s 19 photographic plates, albumen prints, 20 x 26 cm, mounted on heavy cardboard, 34 x 48.5 cm, with title and numbered captions, printed in Russian. The plates were stored for a long time in a damp place; there are numerous traces of soiling, dust and stains. These rare plates are taken from a collection published in the early 1890s containing a total of 37 prints, intended to promote the success and launch of the Trans-Caspian Military Railway (???????????? ??????? ???????? ??????). They depict the various stations and facilities built along the railway line running from Uzun-Ada on the Caspian Sea to the major capitals of Central Asia: Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent. A veritable technical feat of construction, it was built across the deserts and sands of Central Asia, stretching over more than 1,300 kilometres. The construction programme was carried out in three phases between 1880 and 1889.
