[Photographs] Joseph Emile Baeteman (1880–1938), missionary in Ethiopia Set of 17 photographs, first third of the 20th century Photographic portrait, heliogravure, mounted on stiff card, 41 x 31 cm Inscription: ‘Fond regards from a young missionary of the Good Lord to good friends whom he will never forget on these distant shores – J. Baeteman, Apostolic Missionary in Abyssinia’ 16 photographic prints, scenes of daily life and landscapes in Abyssinia, some with captions on the reverse, 8.5 x 11.5 and 17.5 x 24 cm Born in Corbigny (Nièvre), he joined the Lazarists and travelled to Ethiopia as a missionary. He returned to France to serve during the 1914–1918 war. He returned to Abyssinia in 1919 and founded a Lazarist mission in Mändida.
