I am delighted to inform you, Sir, that my daughter’s marriage has been definitively arranged ( ) I shall be leaving Florence in the first few days of July and I expect to be in Paris around the 25th. Mr Stanley has set off to ask my nephew for the hand of his young ward. This course of action seemed appropriate to me. Moreover, nothing in the world could make me happier than this marriage ( ) The estate currently yields an income of one hundred thousand francs Born in London on 4 October 1799 under the name Elisa Alix Sara (or Charlotte Sari), she was officially registered as having unknown parents. However, virtually all historians and biographers agree that she was the biological and illegitimate daughter of Talleyrand and his mistress at the time, Catherine Noël Worlee (better known as Madame Grand), whom he married in both a civil and a church ceremony in 1802. In 1807, Talleyrand devised a legal strategy to regularise the child’s status: he officially became her guardian (pupil). From then on, she was brought up in Talleyrand’s household and, by convention, took her protector’s name.
