In 1857, he published *Les Chants du cœur*, a collection of poems dedicated to Queen Isabella II of Spain. However, Paul Auguez is chiefly remembered in literary and esoteric history for his pivotal role in the emergence of spiritualism in France in the mid-19th century. In 1856, he published *Les Elus de l’avenir, ou Le Progrès réalisé par le christianisme*. In it, he developed a synthetic philosophy seeking to reconcile Christianity, animal magnetism and the study of spiritual fluids. When the Academician Jean-Pons-Guillaume Viennet published a scathing satirical epistle against the supernatural and magic, Paul Auguez responded forcefully in his essay *Les Manifestations des esprits: réponse à M. Viennet* (The Manifestations of Spirits: A Reply to Mr Viennet). This well-argued defence of psychic phenomena earned him the praise of Allan Kardec, the founder of Spiritism. He was appointed Chamberlain of Honour with Cape and Sword to Pope Pius IX.
