Description
[Science] Lectures on experimental physics in Paris, c. 1750 Bound manuscript in-8, titled D.O.M. Philosophia 4a pars seu Physica, 322 pp., written in pen in academic Latin, richly illustrated with colour diagrams and technical drawings, and engravings published by Crépy on Rue Saint-Jacques This document is a ‘dictata’ (lecture notes), a valuable record of the teaching of experimental physics at the major Parisian colleges in the mid-18th century. At that time, science was breaking free from the sole confines of philosophy to incorporate modern mechanical and astronomical demonstrations. Entitled *D.O.M. Philosophia 4a pars seu Physica*, it represents physics, the fourth and final part of the philosophy cycle during the Age of Enlightenment. The manuscript begins with Aristotelian concepts (the distinction between locus proprius and locus communis) before moving on to modern experimental and geometric physics (composition of forces, Copernican heliocentrism, hydrostatics). Enriched with numerous technical diagrams and illustrations in ink, enhanced with coloured pencils, and engravings on themes such as mechanics, ballistics, astronomy and the study of the properties of air, etc. A rare and beautiful document
