Description
[Art] Calder’s *The Red Spider*, 1976 Set of photographic prints 29 black-and-white silver gelatin prints, 1976, by J.P. Salomon, stamped on the reverse, 24 x 16 cm Photographic reportage of the installation of Calder’s stable sculpture *The Red Spider* on the esplanade in the La Défense district, manufactured by Etablissements Biémont 1 colour silver print of the scale model assembled in the courtyard of Etablissements Biémont, 24 x 18 cm Provenance: the collection of Jacques Bazillon (1925–2008), director of Etablissements Biémont in Tours, where the American sculptor Alexander Calder had around 130 of his monumental sculptures produced. It was erected in 1976, the year of the artist’s death. This monumental sculpture, also referred to as a ‘stabile’ in the artist’s own words, is so named in contrast to the artist’s famous mobiles. The Red Spider stands proudly on the Esplanade de La Défense, in front of the Place Défense building. Measuring 15 metres in height and weighing 75 tonnes, the Spider is made of red-painted steel. This work echoes another of the artist’s sculptures: the Flamingo, located in Chicago in the United States and installed two years earlier.
