Paul Pageot des Noutières pursued a career in the Naval Commissariat, the elite corps responsible for the administration, accounting and logistics of the French fleet and colonies.
His career was marked by key posts in France’s naval ports. In February 1842, he was in Bordeaux, where he drafted an important memorandum addressed to the Minister of the Navy concerning the situation in Senegal. Bordeaux was then the main departure point for expeditions to West Africa, and the Naval Commissariat played a pivotal role there in organising transatlantic trade. He subsequently rose to the prestigious rank of Commissioner-General of the Navy, one of the highest positions in the naval administrative hierarchy. In 1858, he published a three-volume work in Rochefort, through the printer Adolphe Mercier, which appears to be a compendium of his administrative experience. In 1872, he was resident in Marseille, at the Hôtel des Docks on Place de la Joliette.
