Description
[Books] COSTANTINI. The Life of Scaramouche. Paris, Hôtel de Bourgogne and Claude Barbin, 1695. In-12, purple morocco, with triple gilt fillet framing the text block, decorated ribbed spine, gilt edges (Duru and Chambolle, 1862). First edition, illustrated with a fine frontispiece by Bonnart, of this famous biography of Tiberio Fiorilli (1608–1694), creator of the character Scaramouche and a leading figure of the Commedia dell’arte. It was written by Angelo Costantini, known as Mezzetin, a member of the Italian troupe, and published at the Hôtel de Bourgogne, the headquarters of the Comédie-Italienne. Spine worn.
