[Manuscript] SCHULER (Jacques). [Treatise on Theology] Fribourg, 1611–1618. In-4, 336 pp., vellum with slight overcover, title, author’s name and call number D270 written in pen on the spine, traces of headbands, blue edges (contemporary binding). Manuscript (autograph?) on heavy laid paper, of this Catholic treatise on casuistry (the resolution of moral dilemmas), in Latin and in five books, dealing with sins, the sacraments in general, baptism, the Eucharist and confession. Fluid handwriting, with no erasures; there is no title page. Illustrated with three headbands and a vignette. Canon of Saint-Nicolas in Fribourg in 1617, then parish priest of the town (1618–1629), Jacques Schuler (1588–1658) became Apostolic Protonotary and Vicar General of the Diocese of Lausanne from 1634. He resigned in 1644 due to disputes with the Fribourg government. He subsequently served as administrator of the diocese (1649–1652), was dean of the chapter of Saint-Nicolas (1650), and vicar-general under Bishop Jodok Knab (1655–1658). In 1651, he published *Hercules catholicus*, a critique of the articles of the Bern Dispute of 1528 (concerning the establishment of the Reformation in Switzerland). Faint water stains.
