Basel, Valentin Curio, February 1522. Small quarto (A-Oiv), fawn half-calf, decorated ribbed spine, black title label (19th-century binding).
A rare Greek edition of Lucian’s dialogues, intended for teaching; it is illustrated with a wood-engraved title page set within an architectural frame, depicting, amongst other things, the death of Crassus.
This copy is enriched, over nearly a third of the volume, with contemporary handwritten annotations in Greek and Latin: lexical corrections in Latin, translations, and references to a Greek lexicon or a grammar book perhaps used by the reader; certain passages are entirely annotated between the lines.
The binding is scuffed, with split joints. There is a small tear on the title page, which was restored some time ago. Stains.
Provenance: the Faure-Giroux library, printers to the King in the 17th century in Grenoble, passed down through the family to Loir-et-Cher.
