Maurice MENARDEAU (1897–1977) ‘In the rice fields at Haiphong’ Oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm, signed lower right. c. 1920. An official painter for the navy, in which he served as an officer during the First World War (1914–1918), he sailed the world’s oceans, spending several extended periods in Indochina during the 1920s and 1930s. He decorated the Navy’s pavilion at the 1931 Colonial Exhibition.
