‘Interrogation of Auguste Chapdelaine, Laurent Pe-Mou and Agnès Tsao-Kouy, China, 1856’
Gouache, 50 x 65 cm ( x cm including frame). The transcript of this interrogation is written on the reverse.
This gouache is the only known artistic depiction of this interrogation, the brutal treatment and subsequent hanging following which triggered the Second Opium War. On 23 October 1856, the British and the French bombarded Canton. The city was subsequently stormed by the coalition forces. The peace treaty was signed in Tien-Tsin in May 1858.
On 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonised Father Auguste Chapdelaine and Agnès Tsao-Kouy.
