Description
Set of 28 playing cards: ‘Jeu des drapeaux’. Anonymous cartographer, Paris, c. 1816.
Chalcography, colours applied by stencil and brush, 28/32 French flag cards (102 × 64 mm), uncut, square corners.
Set of seven frames.
10 x 25.5 cm.
A deck of thirty-two cards created to mark Napoleon’s return from Elba. In this famous deck, spades represent the British, hearts the French, clubs the Russians and diamonds the Germans.
The usual dating (1814 or 1815) needs to be corrected because, as J. Berry points out, the miniature cards reproduce the official portrait of 1816.
