Alexandre Bally, oil on canvas, signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner: A. Bally, pupil of David – Year 8: Portrait of an officer, probably a commissaire des guerres, with long hair and sideburns, a curl in his right ear, wearing a blue coat with a gold-embroidered collar, a red waistcoat or jacket, and a black cravat; on the left lapel he wears the ribbon of the Order of the Lgion d’Honneur marked: Boulogne 1804; gilded frame; 64.5 x 54 cm. (Minor restoration to the canvas and a few small areas where paint is missing).
Date: Year VIII. Good condition.

BAILLY or BALLY Alexandre, portrait painter, born in Paris in 1764, died in Marseille on 31 January 1835, a pupil of
DAVID and BRENET; he made a name for himself through his portraits; he lived in Nîmes, where he taught at the École Centrale, then settled in Marseille, where he was a member of the Academy. He entered the School of the Royal Academy in 1780, and was still working there in 1787.
