Ep‚a general’s epaulette that belonged to General Jean Baptiste Arnaud, Officer of the Legion of Honour and Baron in 1808, with a chiselled and gilded brass mount, the branch in the style of the, a clasp surrounded by pearls and adorned with the double crown of France and Italy within a shield, and in the centre two crossed cannons surmountedby a pomegranate, replaced during the Restoration: originally there was an imperial eagle; the pommel is in the shape of a helmeted figure in profile, probably Italian, with the Lombard crown on the front; the stock is made of ebonyquadrille, adorned at the corners with beaded brass tigelles; the small shuttle is missing which originally sat at the centre of the shaft and was engraved ‘AJ’ (see old photograph); a curious blade with a lenticular cross-section over the first third, then lozenge-shaped, adorned with a blued decoration featuring the general’s coat of arms, the Legion of Honour, and a trophy of artillery weapons (without a scabbard); total length 98 cm First Empire period. Good condition GeneralJean Baptiste Arnaud (1754–1823), appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour on 25 Prairial, Year XII, and colonel of the 58th Line Regiment on 30 Vendémiaire, Year XIII, was part of the Grande Arméein Year XIV 1807, took part in operations in Austria in 1805, in Prussia in 1806 and in Poland in 1807; he was wounded … at Friedland on 14 June 1806; he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1808 and promoted to the rank of G‚brigade general on 13 September 1808 with the title of Baron of the Empire; he went to Spain and fought in the Peninsular War from 1808 … 1814, and was made a Knight of the Order of Saint Louis in 1815 This sword is presented with a certificate by Bertrand Malvaux describing the sword with its missing monogram
