Description
An important and valuable dagger presented by “El Caudillo to the Duce of the Italians, July 1939”. A beautiful hilt covered with a gold plate depicting two eagles standing on their feet, back to back, finely chiselled, their talons resting on a round guard. A sturdy blade, widening towards the point, made of Damascus steel, decorated with gold inlays at the heel and engraved, on one side, within a medallion, with “El Caudillo al Duce de los Italianos Julio 1939”; on the other side, the same motif at the heel and, within a reserved area, the Fascist emblem featuring a bundle of five arrows and a ribbon. Length: 45 cm. Gross weight: 639 g. This dagger was presented by General Franco (El Caudillo) to Il Duce Mussolini. In very good condition. Biographies: Francisco Franco (1892–1975), Spanish general and statesman. As head of a military junta, he launched a war against the Republican government in 1936, known as the Spanish Civil War. Following the Nationalists’ victory in 1939, Franco took the title of Caudillo (the leader) and ruled Spain with an iron fist until his death in 1975. The following year, Franco’s authoritarian regime gave way to a parliamentary monarchy. Benito Mussolini (1883–1945), an Italian politician and dictator, was the founder and leader of the Fascist Party. In March 1919, he established the ‘Fascist Combat Groups’, which brought together unemployed war veterans. In 1922, he organised the March on Rome by the Blackshirts and was appointed head of government by King Victor Emmanuel III. He established an authoritarian regime from 1925 onwards and took the title of Duce (leader).
