A fine hunting knife presented as a gift to Friedrich Karl Florian, a member of the German Reich Hunting Association, on his birthday, 4 February 1942. NSDAP hunting knife. Silver-plated metal mount. Deer antler handle featuring a stag insignia and emblem. Guard with two quillons in the shape of inverted deer antlers. Body knot featuring oak leaves and a shell adorned with a large black grouse. Damascus blade with a hollow-ground back, engraved in German on one side with the inscription ‘To our leader Frédéric Charles Florian on his birthday, 4 February 1942, from the Kreisleitung [another geographical subdivision] of Niederberg [place name, meaning Lower Mountain]’ ; and, on the other side, decorated with a scene of a hunter shooting a stag and a doe in the undergrowth. Scabbard covered in green shagreen with two silver fittings. Pommel engraved with a stag. Total length: 46 cm. B.E. Biography: Friedrich Karl Florian (4 February 1894, Essen, Province of the Rhineland – 24 October 1975, Mettmann), Gauleiter of the NSDAP in the Düsseldorf Gau. Technical mining officer in Buer between 1912 and 1929. He enlisted in the infantry during the First World War, then became a fighter pilot. In 1925, he founded the local branch of the NSDAP in Buer and joined the SA. From 1927, he was Kreisleiter of the party in the Emscher-Lippe district. From 1 January 1930 until Germany’s surrender in 1945, he was Gauleiter of Düsseldorf. He was a member of the Reichstag from 1930 to 1945. He was also a member of the Council of the Free State of Prussia and chairman of the Council of Municipalities of the Rhineland. He was promoted to Gruppenführer of the SA in 1933 and to Obergruppenführer in 1937. He became Reich Defence Commissioner in 1939.
