Description
SWORD OF THE SCHOOL OF MARS, bronze mount with a handle imitating tortoiseshell, rectangular guard with three iron quillons, two of which are brass balls curved towards the blade, and guard sides decorated with a Phrygian cap motif. Straight blade, 53 cm long, with a shortened and ground central ridge; without a scabbard; Revolutionary period; ABE.
NB: Designed by the painter DAVID in 1794, this glaive was intended for the cadets of the École de Mars, a school established to provide them with a republican and military education. It was abolished in October of the same year.
