INFANTRY OFFICER’S SABRE WITH A ROTATING GUARD DATING FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY ERA, brass mount with two openwork arms, one of which is movable (mechanism in need of repair), openwork pommel, wooden handle entirely in filigree (some damage), lion’s head pommel, with a long-tailed cap. A 78 cm curved, pricked blade with triple fuller grooves and a flat back, engraved in gold with symbols and inscribed on one side across five lines ‘POUR / LA LOI / LA / NATION / LE ROY’ and on the other across three lines ‘VAINCRE / OR / DIE’, black leather scabbard with trimmings, side reinforcements and two brass clasps and iron suspension rings, c. 1790–1792, EM/BE.
