Description
A wooden case containing, mounted in the French style on a bed of purple velvet (in need of restoration), a fine 16/65-calibre centre-fire side-by-side shotgun. The 750mm-long curly Damascus barrels retain traces of a tobacco-coloured patina. The firing strip bears, in the centre of the fluted pattern, a smooth cartridge with the large inscription ‘Exhibition Model’ in gold Gothic lettering. Slight dent on the left barrel (easily straightened), front sight missing. Double locking mechanism (pin hook and recoil hook), no play. Grey-hardened receiver with discreet gold inlay decoration. Opens via a serpentine key on the right. The receiver body ends at the rear with a teardrop-shaped relief carved with a file. English stock, 360mm long. Handle and stock checkering missing (worn away), a few minor chips on the fore-end. A two-part butt plate protects the muzzle and the butt end, with the central section of the butt remaining entirely in wood. Mechanism in working order. No rivets. The lid of the case bears the inscription ‘Brun-Latrige, 7 cours Fauriel, Saint-Étienne’ in fine gold lettering. The barrel faces bear the inscription ‘Ronchard Cizeron, gunsmith in Saint-Étienne, gold medal’.
