A fine mid-18th-century French court sword
Straight triangular blade with three hollow edges, 820 mm long, engraved with lines in the upper third of the blade depicting trophies of arms and floral scrolls.
Iron mountings embellished with relief engraving (floral motifs, an amati background enhanced with ground gold, a flattened bulbous pommel with a prominent rivet, a curved crossguard branch at its centre joining the escutcheon on the right, which has a rounded fern-frond finial, functional double donkey’s foot, long guard resting on a concave rectangular base upon a symmetrical bivalve plate, wooden tang richly decorated with complex filigree (interlaced chevron motif with scrollwork), two braided copper wire ferrules, a beautiful flat wrist strap in gold and silver cannetille trimmings, loose fringes with small ‘spinach seed’ beads. No scabbard
