Description
A fine hunter’s sabre from the late 18th to early 19th century. Curved blade with a flat back, highlighted by a fuller; two grooves; point with a counter-edge (showing signs of wear). Gilded bronze mount; pommel with a long tail, engraved with line work. The upper edge of the pommel is engraved with a line supporting a diamond-shaped relief rivet. The flat crossguard is wide at the pommel and tapers towards the crosspiece. Two symmetrical lugs with concave sides; the quillon is straight and rhomboidal. In its wooden scabbard covered in black shagreen with three trimmings. Scabbard cap fitted with a piton and a ring; the scabbard strap likewise. Scabbard tip with an asymmetrical iron barb. The edges of the scabbard are reinforced with two brass cups running the full visible length of the scabbard. The pommel needs reattaching (the clasps are missing from all the fittings). Condition 2+
