A superb, large-sized wheel-hilted dagger: 460 mm
Thick, flat-backed blade with the words ‘Ave Maria’ engraved in relief on the reverse, framed by two rectangular cartouches featuring floral and hatched decoration; the text in relief and the cartouches are highlighted with ground gold, the base of the blade on each side bears a rectangular cartouche with a gilded floral scroll; an unidentified hallmark on the left side of the blade; iron mount; a domed wheel-shaped pommel with a similarly domed rivet; an engraving of a scroll with a hatched and gilded background; slightly domed round guard with traces of gilding on the front face; cylindrical, slightly conical tang adorned at its centre with a ring comprising three hemispherical bands—one wide flanked by two narrow ones, no scabbard; antique work; whilst there is no formal guarantee that this is the work of a late 15th-century cutler, this object is nonetheless of remarkable quality
