Description
Sabre of a non-commissioned officer of the mounted chasseurs or hussars, Revolution–Empire period. Curved blade with a reverse edge and a wide fuller on each side. The fullers are decorated with traditional motifs of captured weapons and floral designs. The weapon has brass mountings, with a long-tailed pommel from which emerges a broad crossguard that joins the crossbar at a right angle whilst tapering towards it. The quillon is round and flat, arched forwards (slightly twisted), with slender, symmetrical guard arms decorated with a shuttle motif in relief. The tang is made of corded wood and covered in leather. It is housed in a brass scabbard with two flat bands and brass rings. The scabbard has been restored by fitting brass or iron rings soldered with tin. No cup at the tip of the scabbard; heavy wear on the point indicating intensive use. Condition 1-
