Description
A fine sabre restored by the Royal Gendarmerie. Curved blade with a rounded spine, highlighted by a fine fuller; wide fuller grooves bearing the inscription ‘Gendarmerie Royale’ in block letters on each side. Hook-shaped point. Beautiful cast bronze mount, with a short-tailed cap; the guard plate is engraved with a fine fleur-de-lis. The main guard branch is concave in shape, dividing at the base into three broad prongs joining the guard plate on the right. The quillon is arched forwards. Marked at the base of the blade: ‘Coulaux Frères Klingenthal’. The tang is made of corded wood, covered in shagreen and filigree-decorated. In its steel sheet scabbard with two wide brass bands, each bearing two bronze rings on studs (wear on the studs indicating that this sabre has been used extensively).
