Description
Large primitive flintlock pistol from the first third of the 18th century. Long barrel, octagonal in shape at the chamber, then multifaceted and finally round; smooth-bore and small-calibre, as was customary at the time (38 balls per pound for this specimen). A primitive flat lock plate signed ‘F BERARDIER’, with a flat swan-neck hammer, a basinet with spring-loaded sides and a battery spring screwed in from the inside. The absence of a nut clamp confirms the early date of the weapon, should its general form not already do so. The weapon is fitted with brass fittings, a flattened round trigger guard over a coiled trigger. The cap has long lugs, a substantial thumb piece, and a openwork counter-plate. Beautiful varnished walnut mount extending to the muzzle and secured to the barrel by pins. The wooden fittings are highlighted by relief carvings. Mechanism in working order, with a wooden rear butt plate. Length 440 mm. (Condition 1-)
