Description
pre-Revolutionary light cavalry officer’s sabre, curved blade with a flat back, fuller and blood groove running along the spine, identical engravings on each side depicting an ancient warrior in armour framed by two friezes; these engravings retain much of their ground gold decoration.
Blade 850 mm long, bronze mountings, a long-tailed cap, a single crossguard branch emerging from the front of the pommel and joining the crossguard at a right angle whilst thickening, two narrow symmetrical lugs with central relief, a corded wooden tang covered in havana-coloured shagreen and filigree, in its attractive brass-sheet scabbard with a worn steel point and two rings mounted on welded python skin; a slight crack at the front of the scabbard, with a remnant of a leather thong at the rear.
