A traditional ceremonial sword from the École des Mines, featuring a triangular blade with three hollow edges, polished to a mirror finish, with beautiful engraving on a blackened background and scrollwork and foliage motifs at the thickest part of the blade; the ricasso bears the signature of Balp, swordmakers in Saint-Étienne. Beautiful chiselled gilded bronze mountings, a round pommel featuring a Minerva’s head in relief and a prominent rivet, a single flattened crossguard connecting to the crossbar, a straight quillon in the shape of a fern frond, a symmetrical, domed guard plate with openwork detailing, bearing a decoration of a crossed miner’s hammer and pickaxe in silver on an oval cartouche. Two mother-of-pearl plates with longitudinal striations, in its sheath (damaged). (Condition 1)
