Description
An interesting flintlock powder flask from the Louis XV period.
Round lock plate, round swan-neck hammer, round iron pan, firing spring screwed in from the inside, iron-mounted gun, fine dark-varnished walnut stock, cap carved with stylised sparrow heads, relief carving highlighting the wood inlay on the fittings.
The powder-testing mechanism is designed for comparative measurements between two batches of powder, being used primarily by artillery officers to gauge the powder’s potency and thus determine the gun’s range.
The powder pan opens into a chamber at the base of a vertical barrel into which the powder to be tested is placed; the explosion of the powder violently pushes back the barrel stopper, which is itself fixed to a toothed wheel graduated from 1 to 15, whose rotation is resisted by a spring-loaded blade pressing against the notches on the wheel; during the test, the wheel stops opposite a mark on the scale, thereby determining the powder’s potency.
