Description
A fine French court sword, circa 1785, with a triangular blade featuring three pans creux.
The main pans creux bears the text ‘vive le roy’, framed by a sun and a trophy of arms, traces of ground gold gilding remain at the base of the engravings adorning the lower part of the blade; blade length 802 mm; traces of azure remain on the secondary faces, featuring a round, crowned cartouche bearing the arms of France.
Beautiful silver mount, Paris hallmark 1785; olive-shaped pommel adorned with a faceted cabochon; flat guard branches flaring out at the centre and decorated with knots and a faceted cabochon that curves forwards; no figurative donkey, symmetrical guard plate decorated with oblique strille patterns in each quarter, surrounded by a frieze on the blade side; the inner side is decorated in relief with a half-cabochon.
The goldsmith’s hallmarks are located on the ferrule against the guard escutcheon
