Description
A cleaned 12th/13th-century single-handed knight’s sword; the blade is 890 mm long and 47 mm wide, straight and symmetrical with a lenticular cross-section, featuring a shallow central fuller that begins at the crossguard and tapers towards the point. Slightly rounded point; one of the grooves features a stylised Greek cross motif within a round cartouche; the blade is slightly curved, the steel still retaining its springy elasticity, with a cleaned orange-peel finish. Cylindrical pommel with two steps, made of wrought iron; the two steps joined by a narrow, slightly concave groove – a variant of the H-type pommel (according to Ewart Oakeshott’s classification in *The Sword in the Age of Chivalry*, page 96). Symmetrical straight guard with conical quillons flaring towards the tip; widened at the escutcheon, with one flat side towards the tang and one side with two blunted edges tapering towards the blade (type 2 guard, again according to Oakeshott’s classification; see *Records of the Medieval Sword*). Flat, triangular tang, slightly concave; no tang end; weight 1.2 kg. Antique forgework, with no formal guarantee of a thousand-year-old origin. The sword’s centre of balance lies on the blade, 120 mm beyond the guard. (Condition 3)
