A fine mid-18th-century French court sword
straight blade with three hollow sections, 815 mm long, featuring a delicate floral engraving on the first quarter of the blade, partly worn away in the main hollow section (the armourer’s signature is illegible)
Iron mountings embellished with relief engravings, enhanced by an Amati ground gilded with ground gold, round pommel decorated with putti; a curved floral guard branch at its centre joining the escutcheon, itself decorated with trophies of arms arching forwards and widening into a bivalve shape; no functional donkey’s foot; bivalve guard plate, decorated with intricate trophies of arms on both the outer and inner surfaces; wooden tang with four rounded, curved sides, wrapped in a coil of silver filigree; hand strap in flat gilded cannetille braid, free-hanging fringe with small spinach-seed-shaped beads
