MILITARIA: British naval officer’s sabre. Handle sheathed in stingray skin, with filigree work. Chiselled brass mountings, with a long-tailed pommel surmounted by a lion’s head. Single-bar guard featuring a shell with a crowned anchor. Straight blade bearing the inscription ‘J HOPKINS 7 Hamond Place Chatham’, filigree work featuring an anchor and a crown, and displaying motifs of military trophies, foliage and the motto ‘Honi soit…’ ’ which may be associated with the British royal coat of arms. Leather scabbard with three engraved brass fittings, one of which bears illegible inscriptions. Wear to the gilding; in its original condition, antique. Total length: 97 cm
