LATE 18TH-CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL Portrait of a young woman wearing a plumed hat An oval miniature painted on ivory depicting a young woman in a half-length portrait, her hair powdered and falling in long curls, wearing a wide black hat with a plume and adorned with a pink ribbon, dressed in a blue-grey dress and a light-coloured shawl, a rose pinned to her bodice. Bears a barely legible signature in the lower right-hand corner, which may read ‘Cognet [or Cognel] …’. On the reverse, an old handwritten label bearing the inscription ‘Cognet – M.B. –’. Set in an oval gilt brass frame with beaded and twisted decoration. Original hanging ring missing. Late 18th century, circa 1780–1790. Visible dimensions: 7.3 × 5.6 cm. Overall dimensions: 8.3 × 6.6 cm. Two slight cracks in the ivory plaque; soiling under the glass; wear and oxidation on the frame; hanging ring missing. Miniature examined whilst framed.
